hi,
The problem was in the network switch configuration (we have a Cisco
Catalyst 4000) -- the Spanning Tree Protocol had to be disabled for RIS to
work properly. Many thanks to Michael Pieters <M.C.Pieters_at_sc.dlo.nl> and
Gerhard Nolte <gnolte_at_gwdg.de> who pointed me in the right direction.
Thanks also to:
"Knut [iso-8859-1] Helleb" <Knut.Hellebo_at_nho.hydro.com>
Yves BLUSSEAU <yves.blusseau_at_sncf.fr>
"Dr. Tom Blinn, 603-884-0646" <tpb_at_doctor.zk3.dec.com>
who responded so quickly!

The original question:
I can't seem to get the RIS working. I've set up everything (ris areas,
/etc/exports and nfs, tftp, bootp/dhcp) according to the docs and the
client manages to load the kernel but fails to mount root. Yes, mountd is
running on the server, and I can mount the ris areas from another machine.
It complains "whoami: no hostname" or something similar (after the "panic,
unable to mount root" message). I've checked that the dhcp/bootp server is
sending the hostname.
I've tried joind, bootpd from the obsolete dist, and ISC's dhcpd...all
have the same results.
