With the wonderful quick help from:

able to get back into my system. Booting from the OS CD, mounting my
drives and copying back what I had tried to move out of /shlib fixed the
problem and now I know more than I did starting out about mounting
drives and fixing a mess....
The question I should have asked is: what can I safely move or link out
of my root directory to make space to install 4.0d. I have deleted many
subsets, i've cleaned out every log and dump and mess I could find... my
directory structure looks like this:

any ideas?
