installation on a DEC 3000/300X

I recently acquired a DEC 3000/300X system. I have
Right now it has two 32 meg simms that are being
identified as 8 meg simms (so it thinks there is 16
meg of ram). I have been unsuccessful at installing
Digital UNIX 4.0B and Tru64 UNIX 5.0.

When attempting to install 5.0, I get an error that
an invalid instruction has been executed.

When attempting to install 4.0B, it says that it is
loading the installation program and scanning for
hardware. The cdrom seems to be accessing, but after
about 3 hours of sitting here, it seem to not get
anywhere, is it working and it's just insanely slow?
Or is there a problem somewhere.

I suspect that 16 megs in such a system is almost
worthless. Anyone know of an inexpensive source for
the special 32 meg simms (or standard 8 meg simms)
required for this machine?

I am a college student and I purchased this machine
to toy around with.

I use NetBSD on several other systems so NetBSD is
always an option if Compaq's UNIX won't run on it.

The SRM has been upgraded to latest (v7.0).

Thanks again,
