firmware levels

We recently had a CPU failure on one of our Alphas. When the engineer came
in he was suprised at the firmware level and upgraded it. When we check the
other Alpha servers they were all at quite an old level. The servers are
8200s and 8400s with a firmware level of either 4.0 or 4.1 . They are
running Tru64 4.0E . The engineer said that the mimimum firmware level for
4.0E was 5.2 and implied there could be problems running at a firmware level
below this. These servers were upgraded from 4.0D to 4.0E in the summer and
we haven't noticed any problems. This leads me to three questions:

1. Do we need to upgrade the firmware level?
2. What are the implications if we don't?
3. Are there any Y2K issues related to old firmware levels?

Apologies if this query has been posted before but I had a look through the
archives and couldn't find a direct match.

Thanks for your help.

Tony Davis.
