rsh/ssh difficulty

Dear Managers,

   Due to a fried disk, we had to reinstall v4.0D PL 5 on one of our
3000/300 client stations. Everything appears to be OK except that rsh
doesn't work properly (I use it because the client stations are a
little ways from my office) and ssh also behaves abnormally.

   If I issue the following command

   rsh client hostname

(client being the client's name and hostname just being a typical UNIX
command with simple, predictable output), the only output is an
indication of when the account password expires (we use C2 security).
If I try

   ssh client hostname

(ssh is v2.0.13), I get the following output

<blank line>
<password expiration message>
<blank line>
<blank line>
<output of hostname command>

   On all of our other clients, rsh and ssh only give the output
of the hostname command.

   I have checked the following:

i) The logs on the client do indicate that rsh and ssh log in. The
hostname command appears correctly in auth.log as a command issued by
rshd.

ii) Other network services like telnet work correctly.

iii) login and getty on the affected client are identical to those on
the other clients.

iv) The "shell" service is enabled in /etc/inetd.conf. sshd2 is
running on the affected client.

v) The problem continues if hostname is replaced by other commands.

   I thought I had seen this problem before, but I couldn't find it in
the archives. There is also an additional problem with ssh only which
I will detail in a separate message. Any suggestions?
