Compiling GUN-make has problems.

I have a Alpha 1000 with 4.0f installed.
gcc is at version 2.7.2 and I'm trying to get gcc make v 3.7.8.1 installed
and when I run the configure script I get the following error:

checking argument types of select()... configure: error: can't determine
argument types


I'm trying to get the make going so I can try to get glib installed next.
