SUMMARY: MAC CRC errors on FDDI card

After talking with the local field service rep and also one of the folks
from Compaq diagnostics, we came to the conclusion that it was one of three
things:
        1) A bad FDDI card (less likely according to the guy from
diagnostics)
        2) A bad port on the hub (more likely according to diagnostics)
or 3) A bad glass cable.

Diagnostics suggested plugging the cable into an empty port, but since we
didn't have an empty port, we traded ports with another server. If the
errors would have appeared on the new server, then it was the hub; if the
errors stayed with the old server, it was either the card or glass.

In our case, the errors hadn't reappeared on either server, so it seems that
the cable just wanted to be reseated.

Thanks to Guy Loucks, Joe Fletcher, Mary Freesmeyer, Oisin McGuinness, &
Richard Bemrose for their help with this. Joe mentioned that software
called Hubwatch could look at the specifics on the hub, Mary & Oisin both
suggested `arp -a` (that MAC didn't show up), and Richard mentioned that at
http://standards.ieee.org/regauth/oui/index.html it shows that the MAC
address was built by DEC.

Since the problem has gone away (for now), I'm just going to keep an eye out
for it.

I'll post a follow-up if there is anything new.

Subject: Follow-up: MAC CRC errors on FDDI card

After looking at all of the servers on our FDDI network, I've identified one
of the two MAC addresses from the error (DA: 08-00-2b-b9-f9-c0) as the FDDI
card on the server throwing the errors; but I can't find the other MAC
address anywhere else on the network. Could this be the MAC address for the
hub? If so, how would I check it?

The card in the server is a DEFPA and the hub has the name "DECcontcentrator
900MX" on it.

Thanks,

John

We've got /var/adm/messages filling up with messages like this:
Jan 17 00:03:46 merlin vmunix: fta0: MAC CRC Error: DA: 08-00-2b-b9-f9-c0 =>
SA: 00-00-f8-b8-47-7a

The server is an 8400 running 4.0d PK5.

This server is also our Networker Server and backs up multiple clients over
the FDDI network (using fta0). However, I'm not seeing corresponding errors
on the Legato Clients.

I thought I would ask the opinion of the list before I give Compaq a call.

Thanks,

John
