Looking for a definitive explaination of dns/bind

Hi,

We have outsourced a lot of our network management, however I have a need to
understand how dns/bind works. Currently on the internal side of the
firewall we have a sun that acts as the source of all internal name
resolutions (which is in the outsource and which is running the latest
version of bind I believe) and a DEC alpha running Tru64 v4.0F, which is
supposed to be a redundant supply of internal name resolutions (this machine
is not part of the outsource).

Currently the DEC is setup as a slave server, and relies on the other
internal server if it can't resolve an address. I would like to change this
so that the DEC can directly send queries further up the line, mainly to
cover situations when the sun machine is down for some reason. At the moment
I'm not ophay with the way dns/bind all fits together and was wondering if
someone out there in guru land could point me in the right direction.
