Hi folks,

I have a problem with a revived printer connected to the lp0 port
of one of our alphas (Tru64v4.0f):

I installed an input filter (perl script) for this printer to
give it PostScript and other capacities.
All works fine locally.

Now I want to acces the printer from a remote machine and get the
message:

calypso: /usr/lbin/lpd: Illegal service request (2) from colossus

Printing is allowed in /etc/hosts.lpd

The printcap entries are as follows:

Local:
#PCL Local Printer with PS filter
drucker|lp14:\
        :lf=/usr/adm/lp14err:\
        :if=/etc/drucker-if:\
        :lp=/dev/lp0:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd14:\
        :ct=dev:\
        :sh:

Remote:
#PostScript remote
drucker|lp14|14:\
        :ct=remote:\
        :lf=/usr/adm/lp14err:\
        :mc#0:\
        :mx#0:\
        :rm=calypso:\
        :rp=drucker:\
        :sd=/usr/spool/lpd14:\
        :sh:

The syslog says the following, not very useful to me:

Feb 10 10:36:55 calypso lpd[4590]: DEBUG -- lpd: accept on unix socket
Feb 10 10:36:55 calypso lpd[4590]: DEBUG -- fork_with_retries: child pid

Feb 10 10:36:55 calypso lpd[4627]: DEBUG -- chkhost: connection to print
er is not allowed in /etc/hosts.equiv
Feb 10 10:36:55 calypso lpd[4627]: DEBUG -- chkhost: connection to print
er is ok in /etc/hosts.lpd
Feb 10 10:36:55 calypso lpd[4627]: DEBUG -- colossus requests recvjob dr
ucker
Feb 10 10:36:55 calypso lpd[4627]: DEBUG -- lpd/doit: got RECVJOB reques
t for printer drucker
Feb 10 10:36:55 calypso lpd[4627]: ERROR -- calypso: /usr/lbin/lpd: Ille
gal service request (2) from colossus
Feb 10 10:36:55 calypso lpd[4627]: ERROR -- exiting ...

BTW, the same happens when I try to send a print job via a second
host, only this interim host has the problem then.

Obviously I am missing an important entry in some config file,
but the man page for lpd and printcap isn't any help since it does not list
any diagnostics.

tia,

Tschüß,
                                                Dieter
