Thanks to Dr. Thomas P. Blinn (UNIX Software Group, Compaq Computer
Corporation) and his colleagues, the web server performance problem has
been resolved. They had thought it might be a problem with Name Servers and
after checking the setup for the name server addresses one of them had an
incorrect IP address. It was stalling on checking it and then going to the
secondary IP address which was correct. Thus telnet and ftp worked from the
machine but the web server was greatly slowed down.
Thanks to other people that advised various tuning improvements and swap
space increases. The Compaq document for Tuning Web Servers was also very
helpful. I did these changes and they will help when we get back to normal
loads on the server.
