Hi all,

I had a problem connecting an AlhaServer ES40 running
Tru64 4.0f to an APC SmartUPS 3000 (SU3000INET)
using PowerChute Plus v4.2.2.1.

solution:

1.
As Nikola Milutinovic pointed out I misunderstood
the manual. You do not have to add anything
to /etc/inittab (unless you have a modem
connection setup on that port). Since I don't
have a modem on this system I removed
the line which I had added.

2.
Apparently COM1 is not a regular COM port.
Nikola Milutinovic suggested to try COM2
instead of COM1, and that works just fine.

Thanks again,
Bart.

original question:

I have tried to connect an AlhaServer ES40 running
Tru64 4.0f to an APC SmartUPS 3000 (SU3000INET)
using PowerChute Plus v4.2.2.1. The software
seems to be installed ok, but the machine
is unable to communicate with the UPS.
I have used the '940-0024c' cable to connect the
UPS to the first COM port on the Alpha.
I added the following line to /etc/inittab
ups:3:off:/usr/sbin/getty -h tty00 2400
I did 'init q'. When I then do 'ps aux | grep -i getty'
I only get a line corresponding to the
console (/usr/sbin/getty console console vt100).
When I try 'upsoff /dev/tty00 AAA' nothing
hapens. 'upswrite /dev/tty00 verify' followed
by 'echo #?' returns 255 instead of 5.
