Hi all,
I have a 4100 running Tru64 v. 4.0D with patch kit 5 installed that has come
up with a "Redundant Power Supply Failure" even though this server does not
have a redundant power supply!
After logging a call with Compaq I was initially told that this problem was
due to an environment monitoring bug with envmond. Fixes had apparently
been put in the patch releases but had failed to resolve the problem. This
kinda supported what I saw, apart from the error message that was sent to
screen there was no indication of anything wrong in the system log
files/system performance, etc.
Compaq then got back to me and said that the bug had similar symptoms but
was not the problem I was experiencing. The problem I have is that Compaq
themselves do not seem to be consistent in their evaluation of this. At one
point an engineer said that it is a hardware glitch that could be resolved
by either replacing the Mother board or upgrading to 4.0F!! This seems to
be contradictory to say the least.
The bottom line from Compaq now is that they say replace the Mother board
and if that doesn't work, upgrade!
Has anybody out there seen this ??
Here is what they say officially.....
-------------------------
Below is an explanation :
What happens is when envmond sends a request down into the platform, the I2C
driver returnsI2C_ERROR status when the sensor is not working. The same
status is returned when the powersupply status is bad. When envmond recieves
this status in response to its request for powersupply status, it assumes
that since the system is still up it must have redundant power supplies and
that one (or more) have failed. It therefore broadcasts the message you are
seeing.
Although similar error messages have been resolved by applying a patch, we
believe that in your case this is a hardware problem as you already have the
patch applied.
We believe this is not a bug, it is how the environmental monitoring
framework hangs together and works.
As a first pass we would like to arrange for the MotherBoard to be swapped
on this system.
