ps hang

Before I resort to a reboot, I wonder if anyone has any pointers:

ES40, DU 4.0F, PK2.

The ps command hangs and the ps process then cant be killed
or backgrounded.

vmstat shows nothing unusual:

Virtual Memory Statistics: (pagesize = 8192)
  procs memory pages intr cpu
r w u act free wire fault cow zero react pin pout in sy cs us sy id
 13 596 56 207K 243K 62K 11464M 83M 299M 876 72M 0 333 71K 1K 54 7 39

Swap space seems plentiful:
Swap partition /dev/rz0b:
    Allocated space: 500000 pages (3906MB)
    In-use space: 1 pages ( 0%)
    Free space: 499999 pages ( 99%)

Total swap allocation:
    Allocated space: 500000 pages (3906MB)
    In-use space: 1 pages ( 0%)
    Available space: 499999 pages ( 99%)

And the machine seems to be functioning as normal, apart from this.

Any ideas folks?
