Hi all,
(short version, if you are considering to buy an UPS also read
the long version below)
We have several Alpha's connected to one UPS, but
only one of them is connected to the UPS with a
serial cable. What we want is that this machine,
when it gets the shutdown signal from the UPS, shuts
down the other machines connected to the same UPS.
All machines are of course connected to each other through
the network. The PowerChute software that came with
the UPS does not support this (for Tru64, see below), but
it allows the user to run a script before the machine shuts
down. So what we need is a script that shuts down
the other machines via the network.
However we do not now how to do this
in a secure and reliable way. If someone has a script
that accomplishes this, it would be great if you
could share it with us.
(long version)
When we decided that we were going to buy UPSes
for our Alpha machines we contacted APC and told
them that we wanted UPSes for Alpha's running
Tru64. We also told them that we wanted to put more
than one machine on the same UPS and that the UPS or
its software should be able to shutdown all machines
connected to it.
They (APC) told us this would be possible. The only
problem they told us about is that we would not be
able to use the 'interface expander card' because this
only uses simple signaling whereas PowerChute for
Tru64 only supports smart signaling (that is they
gave us some vague answer and we where able to
find the rest of the info on there WEB-site). They told us that
this was not a real problem since PowerChute would
be able to shutdown the other systems via the network.
What they did not tell us is:
* PowerChute is no longer supported for Tru64
* PowerChute network shutdown was not available.
It should be available now, but not for Tru64
(and you need to put a network card in the UPS)
I think if they were planning to stop support for Tru64 they should
have told us. So if you are thinking to buy a UPS for your Alpha
running Tru64, you better check with some other manufacturers first!
