Greetings. One of the profs here has "inherited" an Alpha 500au with no
disk drive, no tape drive, no mouse, no keyboard, and, more to the point,
no video card and asked me to set the thing up for him to run
tru64-unix. It looks as if we'll be installing 4.0F.
I've rounded up most of what I need, except for the video card. This
system will be used mostly for data analysis, i.e., calculations, so it
doesn't require much in the way of video. I checked the Compaq page which
discusses video drivers for Alpha workstations and found it slightly
confusing: I found a reference to a Matrox Millenium, which is probably
about the right level for this system, but then I found a disclaimer that
this product had been replaced by the "Elsa GLoria Synergy". That seems to
be overkill. I looked at the PowerStorm cards and thought the 4D20 might
be OK, but again I found a disclaimer that this card had been replace by
the PowerStorm 300. Unfortunately, the PowerStorm 300 doesn't appear to
support Unix.
This sequence may converge at some point, but I decided it would be simpler
just to ask you folks: can anybody recommend a middle-of-the-road,
PCI-based video card which is supported under tru64 4.0F?
Thanks.
- Mike
