Dear Sir,
I am an undergraduate electronic engineering student in my final (fourth) year at Potchefstroom University. In this year we are compelled to complete a project, about which we must report in the format of a script.
I include a brief description of my project:
Title: "Techo-economic Modelling of ADSL as an alternative Internet access medium"
ADSL is a relatively new technology in South Africa. ADSL as you know is capable of delivering Internet as well as a video-on-demand facilities to customers. I need to determine if the current communications infrastructure in SA will be able to handle the high Baudrate generated with more and more subscribers making use of ADSL in a MAN environment.
I need:
1) IP packet trace data of typical video-on-demand stream traffic. If this traffic traces is solely video-on-demand, we can locally mix it with known Internet access traffic data. However, if your data can contain IP header traces of Internet access, mixed with video-on-demand for a few customers, I will definitely welcome it.
2) I need the mentioned data measured on the head-end of an existing ADSL scheme if at all possible. However, no matter how and where the videostream data can be measured, please include a system block diagram indicating the point of measurement.
3) I need these packet traces during peak video-on-demand time. (I supppose that peak time for video delivery will be on Saturday nights from 17h00 to 5h00.)
We will use this and other data to:
a) Model the ADSL communications channel by the best means available,
b) model the total data communications system dynamics formed by ADSL and the video-on-demand streams mixed with Internet access data,
c) try and predict what the pricing structures of ADSL will be in SA and
d) simulate a typical video+Internet session over ADSL in a neighborhood and predict where bottlenecks can result as well as
e) determine picture quality (due to lost frames etc.) for the average user.
If you have any information on suitable statistical (or other) models for ADSL please inform us about the source thereof or sent it along if you may.
Please contact undersigned by e-mail for any further explanations.
