My question was why does acroread 4.0 produce the following error message

inst emulated pid=11742 <acroread> va=0x11ffff0f0 pc=0x120058df0
inst=0x37ef0090

All the responses I received indicated that the problem is caused by
acroread 4.0 being compiled for newer processors (specifically, EV5),
whereas I'm running something older (EV4). The message "inst emulated"
means that the operating system is emulating an instruction that is not
native to the processor. This will slow down the performance but it
shouldn't cause any errors.

The suggested solutions are to go back to using acroread 3.0 or use xpdf
instead.

Thanks to all who responded!
