HP network print filter, DU 4.0

I am in the process of converting print queues from transcript on a
Sun to the included filters on DU 4.0. Most of my printers are HP
jetdirect types, and /usr/lbin/hplaserpsof mostly works ok.

Some files, however, print intermittently using hplaserpsof, though
they work every time using transcript. So far, this has only been
observed on a LaserJet 4050N; the same file prints every time on the
other printers (including 4000N). And the file prints every time if
job banners are turned on. The failure mode is an error message on
the printer display: "40 EIO 2 BAD TRANSMISSION"

Has anyone else seen this? Found a fix? Does anyone have other
filters for these printers that they prefer? The transcript filter
doesn't retry if the printer is busy when it first attempts to
connect, so I want to get away from it.

Also, how do other folks do things like tray selection and duplexing?
I've got some dumb scripts but am interested in better solutions.
