Hi,
the solution was fairly simple and to be honest pretty obvious ... the
"cannot
open Display (hostname) was the key" .... I could log in using
the IP address but not the hostname ... the box uses NIS and the /etc/hosts
file was been populated and not the /var/yp/src/host so when the CDE was
looking for the hostname it could not find it ..
I've now populated the /var/yp/src/hosts with all the correct IP/hosts and
the
login now works ok
Thanks to Hank Lee and Kevin Partin for responding
Tony.

In /var/dt/Xconfig, set
###########################################################################
#
# To disable R4 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 per-user authorization.
#
Dtlogin*authorize: False
This should allow logins. You may have to restart the Xserver.

Perhaps they would try a completitive project. We use WRQ Reflection X
here,
and it seems to work just fine. (no special setup needed on the UNIX box) I
believe their web page is
http://www.wrq.com.

Hi,
I have a problem with the CDE environment using Exceed in that
users can't login. (can't open display ??? )
I am using an Alphaserver 8200 running v4.0d
The login/password is accepted and then the
dtsession fails.
Now, I'm not too familier with CDE but I am aware that the .Xauthority
needs
to have the "OMIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1" ....
I have read through the archives and have seen this problem before but any
solutions has not solved my problem. (although this could be a lack of
knowledge
about the problem )
The Exceed configuration is not the solution as I can access other Digital
Unix boxes
from Exceed
There doesn't seem to be a lot of differences between the problem box and
the others
except that the .Xauthority is overwritten everytime I try to login into
the "problem" box
The dtsession is not using the .dtprofile and is probably using the default
sys.dtprofile
I have tried to use xauth to merge the .Xauthority from a "correct" box
but
it is over written once I try an unsuccessful login
Telnet , ftp etc all work into the box
I have included both the errorlog and the startlog
Any help would be appreciated
