How to stop a beeper?

Hello,

this morning we found one of our AlphaServer 1000
loudly beeping. The keyboard was ok (no key locked
in pressed state), no error in syslog, no weird process
running.
I didn't know any way to stop that beeping (tried to force
a "warning bell" mis-typing some command with no result)
so I send the machine to single-user level. The sound
didn't yet stop.

Only when I halted the machine the beeper finally silenced.

I has been lucky that nobody was logged on, so I could
shutdown the machine, but elsewhere do you know another
way to handle with system beeper?
(With a AlphaServer 1000 is not possible even to open the
machine cover to unplug the loudspeaker, because of the
security switch)

Thank you

Massimo Gais <mgais_at_na.astro.it>
