basic scripting question - for prior dates

Hello Admins,
        I'd like to environment variable that reflects the date 6 months
ago. Using the date command, I can create todays date:

# TODAYSDATE=`date +"%m%d%y"`

which returns a value of 031600

I'm using kornshell. Is there a way to avoid writing a if-then loop, or
does somebody have a date identifier?
