Perhaps I should submit yet another summary. Here it is.
The program 'xev' showed that those keys that caused trouble in
conjunction with certain modifiers did not generate any X events.
Then I tested a number of various keyboards, and all tested keyboards
of the same sort as I used (non-DEC) manifested the same malfunction.
C'est la vie... I installed the right keyboard, and since then everything
has been working as it should.
I would like to thank:
Lucio Chiappetti, Peter Stern, Ann Cantelow, and V.S. Glukhov for their
responses to my summary. Lucio Chiappetti suggested other approach to
my target, while Peter Stern and V.S. Glukhov suspected that I had no 'xev'
in my 4.0D system because I had not installed all the necessary X subsets
- I'll check it up. Below are my first summary and original question.
