something OS based, similiar to lm_sensor for linux, but I can do the
mentioned option just as easily...

Yes. Get a suitable thermocouple (an electronic oven thermometer might
be a reasonable starting point) and attach it to the CPU the system box,
on the mother board. Be sure to do this in a way that will not obstruct
air flow or otherwise limit the available cooling. Then use a suitable
external monitoring device (for instance, the electronics from the oven
thermometer) to read the CPU temperature.
There is nothing built into the system to do this for you, but if you
really want to do it (I assume your system is long out of warranty), it
can be done. Just be careful that you don't fry the CPU, since I doubt
the parts to repair the system are cheap, assuming they're available.
