find: .: I/O error

Im getting

find: .: I/O error

when I do a find on a particular directory but nothing is showing up
in the binary error log (using uerf or dia) and nothing is showing in
/var/adm/messages. There are no io errors reported when doing an "ls
-lR" in the same directory.

The directory in on an advfs which consists of 3 partitions on 2
disks. The system is an alpha server 1000 4/266 running Digital UNIX
V4.0E.

What's going on?
