telnetd: login_tty: Not a typewriter

I'm seeing this error when I attempt to telnet into one of our workstations
(PW 500au, 4.0d, PK5)

        johlos:merlin> telnet trigger
        Trying 128.1.4.89...
        Connected to trigger.
        Escape character is '^]'.
        telnetd: login_tty: Not a typewriter
        .
        Connection closed by foreign host.

If I boot to genvmunix, I do not receive this error when I telnet in. The
only thing to change recently on the server was that I installed the SCSI
CAM Medium Utilities and the Robot Drivers, and then rebuilt the kernel.

Any thoughts? It seems odd to me that I can telnet with genvmunix but not
vmunix.

Thanks,

John
