Setting up a dial-out modem

All,

I'm after pointers on how to set up a modem (a US Robotics 56K Faxmodem, but
everything these days seems to be Hayes compatible) for dial out from a
Tru64 4.0F server.

I have tried following the instructions in the Network Administration manual
for setting up /etc/acucap and /etc/remote.
What I want to use is "tip -38400 ########" to connect to an interactive
dialup service.

When I try this, I get:

        can't synchronize
        call failed
        [EOT]

I have not modified /etc/acucap, assuming that the existing hayes entry is
adequate.
The only change I made to /etc/remote is to add "dv=/dev/tty01" and
"at=hayes" to the "dial####" entries, on the basis that the "tip####"
entries appear to point back to these.

Can anyone point me to better doco on setting up tip etc., than the Compaq
manuals? Does anyone have a similar setup working?

Thanks,
David Meiklejohn
