Compaq Enterprise Technical Symposium 2000
October 1 - October 6, 2000, Los Angeles
Los Angeles Convention Center
Theme:
"Link up! Sync Up! Be the Future!"
Overview:
The Compaq Enterprise Technical Symposium is a new annual technical event
co-sponsored by Compaq, Compaq's ASE (Accredited Systems Engineer) Program,
U.S. DECUS, the Compaq Solutions Alliance (CSA) and NT Wizards. The symposium
is primarily for constituents of those organizations, but is not limited to
them. UNIX Ambassadors, OpenVMS Ambassadors, members of Compaq user group
communities and others are also expected to attend since the event is open to
all technical implementers of Compaq-based solutions.
The purpose of this event is to educate the Compaq technical community
(internal and external) about new technologies and solutions from Compaq
and its partners. To accomplish this, Compaq is committed to providing the
best enterprise technical knowledge; the entire knowledge network will be
represented. The event also functions as an advocacy forum for our user
group communities, customers, and technical business partners. This one
event replaces the following four conferences:
. Compaq's Accredited Systems Engineer Conference (ASE)
. U.S. DECUS Symposium (Digital Equipment Computer Users Society)
. NT Wizards (for system engineers who use the Microsoft Windows NT OS)
. The Global Technical Conference (a developerUs conference sponsored by CSA)
Event Objectives:
. To strengthen the partnership between Compaq and its technical users, sales
channels, developers and internal technical support.
. To reinforce Compaq's industry leadership in technology, products,
solutions, and services through technical knowledge exchange,
encompassing the full breadth of Compaq offerings from ESSG and
CPCG (includes products, futures, hands-on experience,
bi-directional dialog, etc.).
. To encourage direct interaction with the Compaq engineering community,
providing attendees with the opportunities to gain insight on how
to best deploy Compaq's technology. This interaction should foster
two-way advocacy between Compaq and its users, partners, and
developers.
. To provide a medium within our target audience communities for them to
get to know one another and to discover the resources they have
(including each other) for solving problems.
. To facilitate attendees learning from others who have dealt with, or are
currently dealing with similar world implementation issues.
. To increase attendees' confidence in Compaq technical solutions and
competitive advantage to meet their business needs.
. To reward our target audiences for their loyalty and dedication to
Compaq.
. To enable stakeholders to maintain their individual identities through
session tracks, birds-of-a-feather" informal sessions and special
gatherings.
. To create visibility for and awareness of the ASE Program, Compaq
Solutions Alliance and DECUS.
Target Audience:
The event is for technical people who recommend, buy, develop or implement
solutions based on technologies from Compaq and its partners. Many of these
IT professionals design and support highly complex computer systems based
on Compaq solutions. Maintaining the loyalty of this technical community
allows Compaq to retain a big competitive advantage. Most of these people
don't work directly for Compaq, but are like secondary sales people because
of their loyalty and commitment to Compaq and its solutions. Many attendees
are employed by Compaq's partners (including ISVs, SIs, VARs, ISPs, ASPs
and consultants). Some attendees are employed by major corporations and
government agencies. This high quality event helps sustain and strengthen
this technical community because it is the single best source for the
information these people need in order to do their jobs.
The audience is broadly categorized as follows:
. Compaq Accredited Systems Engineers (ASEs) and Master ASEs - primarily
North America (with some international)
. Major account Systems Engineers (SEs)
. Compaq Field System Engineers (FSEs), Enterprise Architect and ETSS/ECS
groups
. Windows NT technical community
. OpenVMS technical community
. UNIX community
. Other pre-sales technical audiences
. Partners associated with CSA (including ISVs, SIs, Consultants, ASPs and
ISPs)
The co-sponsoring organizations are the technical groups that promote
Compaq enterprise positioning within customer accounts and within companies
that develop and implement solutions on Compaq technology. The ASE
community consists of highly trained technical professionals who have
passed a series of certification examinations to prove their
knowledge of Compaq solutions. DECUS is an association of Information
Technology Professionals that promotes computer products, services and
technologies of Compaq and related vendors. NT Wizards is a group of
Windows NT technologists committed to the delivery of technical training
and information about Windows NT. CSA, the Compaq Solutions Alliance, is a
broad-based partnering program that provides extensive technical and
marketing program support and benefits to members and subscribers around
the world. All of these organizations are responsible for recommending
and/or implementing Compaq-based solutions to the enterprise user or
partner communities.
One of Compaq's strengths relative to its competitors is the largest
partner community who not only attend the event, but also contribute to the
solutions demonstrated. This community gives Compaq extended reach
throughout the world.
Desired Results:
As a result of attending this new symposium, we want the attendees to:
. Learn more about Compaq as a complete enterprise solution provider and
partner
. Learn in-depth technical information about Compaq products, solutions &
tools
. Gain hands-on experience with the newest Compaq technology
. Learn more about the relationship between Compaq and its strategic
solution partners
. Develop a stronger relationship with Compaq and feel like a valued part
of the Compaq team
. Develop a high degree of camaraderie among those who share the same
experiences in working with computer systems, and have attended the
traditional events
. Know they can count on each other as an extended support community
. Learn more about the resources available to them through Compaq that will
help them develop, sell, install, implement, optimize, support and
maintain Compaq-based solutions
. View Compaq solutions as a better value than competitorsU offerings
. Strengthen their confidence in Compaq as the premier partnering company
of choice
When attendees leave this conference, we want them to:
. Evangelize Compaq solutions to their customers and/or within their own
organizations
. Drive sales of Compaq products and solutions
. Recommend and develop solutions based on Compaq's newest product area
. Pursue further training and ASE or Master ASE certification on Compaq
products and solutions
. Be able to provide a strong positive comparison of Compaq solutions
versus those from competitors
. Choose Compaq as the development and implementation platform for their
products.
Program Format:
The symposium program includes:
. Pre-symposium All Day Training Seminars
Scheduled for Sunday, October 1 and Monday, October 2, the seminars can be
either one or two days in length. These seminars are a separate fee from
the main conference.
. Industry Keynote and Compaq Executive Presentations
These presentations provide the attendees with first hand knowledge of
Compaq's strategic directions and what's happening throughout the industry.
. In-depth Technical Sessions
Scheduled for Tuesday, October 3 through Friday, October 6, these breakout
sessions are 75 minutes in length (lecture format). Sessions may include a
demo with the presentation but there wonUt be the opportunity for hands-on
experience with the subject matter. (See Hands-on Workshops). These
sessions, as with the rest of the content for the event, must be technical,
not marketing or sales-related. Customer presentations on real-life
experiences or case studies are very well received and encouraged.
. Hands-on Workshops
Workshops are usually between 2 and 4 hours in length and provide the
attendee with "hands-on" experience with the subject matter. Workshop sizes
are strictly limited to allow maximum exposure to the equipment and
workshop materials. Attendees sign up for these workshops. They may be
repeated during the week to allow maximum exposure and provide this
opportunity for hands-on use to as many attendees as possible.
. Living Lab Solution Demonstrations
The Living Lab is very similar to the Compaq Technology Center that we have
had at previous DECUS conferences. This is not a trade show. The solutions
shown in the Living Lab are Compaq-focused and orchestrated by
Compaq. Partner solutions may be demonstrated here but only if they provide
significant value-add to a Compaq solution and only at the invitation of
Compaq. Compaq's technical professionals will staff the demonstrations of
currently available products and solutions. The Living Lab replaces the
Compaq Technology Center.
. NDA Presentations
These presentations are given on products and solutions that havenUt yet
been announced to the public for those attendees who are under
non-disclosure with Compaq. Compaq reserves the right to select the people
who are admitted to these NDA sessions and no attendee will be admitted
without a current binding NDA. The NDA session may include a demo of the
product.
. Clinics
Clinics provide a detailed technical update on a specific product or
solution and are 90 minutes to 3 hours in length. An example topic might be
a new release of Tru64 UNIX, where engineers and product managers cover
detailed specifications on what has changed, and why.
. Birds-of-a-Feather Sessions (BOFs)
BOFs are pre-scheduled meetings of a group who share a special
interest. Meetings can be scheduled in advance of the symposium or onsite,
time and space permitting. BOFs are designed to accommodate SIGs, local
user groups, etc.
. Trade Show
. Receptions/dinners/fun activities to promote camaraderie
