**********************************************

Thanks for all your replies. You were right that the 'advfs' filesystem wasn't
the problem at all. Neither was it the mountclient from the Linux machine,
though it confused me with the that error massage.
Trying the same mount from another Alpha gave a better hint: ' nfs portmaper:
RPC: program not registered '.
Solution:
There was a 'mountd' present on the server but no 'nfsd'.
After starting 'nfsd', mount works fine from all machines.
