[SUMMARY - partial] X Error from acroread with kde?

My question was about the combination of KDE, acroread and
TU 40.F producing this error message:

X Error of failed request: BadAccess (attempt to access private resource
denied)
Major opcode of failed request: 88 (X_FreeColors)
Serial number of failed request: 369
Current serial number in output stream: 370

I didn't get any answers and I haven't found a solution that
persists yet. Some fixes seem to work but then the problem comes
back the next time the user logs in.

Monday acroread worked, yesterday it didn't, today it does.

Sometimes it only fails in a kvt window and works fine in
either an xterm or konsole window. Other times it fails with
any terminal emulator window.

It isn't a lock of colours because it can fail even with KDE held
to 24 colours and no other applications running but at other times
it will work with KDE allowed unlimited colours and other colour
rich applications (like netscape) also running.
