Thanks for the help everyone...

in short the answer is, get & update to nmh as replacement for mh.
Which I already had but didn't move the old one to .bak and make a link to
the new one.

There's also an option in sendmail to allow unqualified pathnames...
     FEATURE(accept_unqualified_senders)
In your .mc file.
