After hint from Peter.Stern_at_weizmann.ac.il
I began to read dtlogin man page, so at last
I discovered that in /etc/dt/config
the installation of the Italian subset created
a file Xconfig with this:
#include "/usr/dt/config/Xconfig"
Dtlogin*language: it_IT.ISO8859-1
Simply commenting out the Dtlogin*language
reverted the system to its previous behaviour.
