malloc_mem_alloc error

Hi managers. Recently, our AlphaStation 255/233MHz server (running DU4.0D)
has come up with the following error message in /var/adm/messages:

Apr 15 18:49:19 odin vmunix: malloc_mem_alloc: no space in map

When this happens, programs like ps just hang, but people can still logon
to the system. Eventually it grinds down so no network services are
available and we are forced to reboot. This will keep the system going for
a little while, but eventually (from 12hrs to a couple of days) the system
grinds down again.

I've found similar postings about this problem (re: Steve VanDevender's
posting on 12th Aug, 1998) which pretty much describe exactly what's going
on here, but all the replies say install the latest patch set. Well, I've
done this (patch set #5, 7th Oct, 1999), but we're still getting this
error. The summaries all said Patch set #3 would fix this, so I could only
assume that #5 would certainly do the job.

So if people can tell me what needs to be done, I will be very
appreciative.

Thanks,

------------
