System crash - /etc/group corrupted

Hello All,

We are running DU4.0f on an Alpha 4100. The other night we had a crash.
This may just be a coincidence, but at the time of the crash I was trying
to run queries against the database on this server via MS Excel. The
database is UniData 4.1, and the pc is using UniData's UniDesktop ODBC
drivers to connect to the server. While trying to make the ODBC connection
all telnet connections to the server were lost. I went to the console and
was greeted by the blue screen of death. There was nothing on the screen,
not even a console prompt. However, the machine still seemed to be
running as it could be pinged from other servers, and I was even able to
make an odbc connection from my pc and view the meta-data.

Since there was no access via the console, and all connections were being
refused I rebooted the machine. After coming up things looked ok until I
tried to run a database session. That attempt gave me an error message
about id[15] not existing or something like that. Recognizing this as a
group number I checked /etc/group and found it had become corrupted.
After restoring it from backup all was well again.

What might be the cause of a corrupted group file? Where might I search
for clues as to what actually happened? I searched /var/adm/syslog.dated
but the applicable directory had nothing but empty files.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Regards,

Rob
