I guess no-one else has come across this.
I guzip'd the file and got the same message. During unzipping the file grew
to about 12 GB (original file was 13 GB) before giving up.
My guess is that there is a 1 GB limit on a gzip file (gzip as supplied with
4.0D)
Thanks to Joe Comunale for his thoughts.
ps. gzip did not complain when it created the archive in the first place.
I might try compress and see how that goes.
