I was asking about CAM SCSI errors from the system disk (4.3GB)
of a DPW600au. The types of error reported were (with varying
block numbers):
bbr_start: Transient error at block number: 5680653
and
bbr_start: Device auto-reassigned block at block number: 8251054
Thanks to Harald Baumgartner, Mitch Kulberg, Bryan Lavelle,
Dr. Tom Blinn, John Becker, alan_at_nabeth.cxo.dec.com and
John J. Francini for there replies.
All said much the same: when this happens frequently or is
persistent it indicates a disk going bad. The recommendation
was to probe the disk with scu so I did:
$ scu -f /dev/rrz17c
scu> show defects grown
which showed 34 defects. (Checking other disks on this machine and
others: all showed 0 defects except another 4.3GB on a DPW500au
which showing 32 defects and a 2.1GB on an old AlphaStation showing
209 defects!)
These errors started 36 days ago and there've been 13 since then.
Often they happen while defragcron is running but also at other times.
I'll be calling Compaq support to see about a replacement.
The other piece of advice was to make immediate backups while
the filesystems are still recoverable.
