Followup4: Upgrade to 4.0E crashes DEC3000 when starting X

System:
DEC 3000 M800, 200MHz, 128MB, PMAGC-BA (= ZLX-M2)

Symptom:
cpu panic when the CDE login screen starts

Description:

This problem was posted one year ago. I found only three followups but no
summary with a solution. The originial posting can be found at:

http://www.ornl.gov/its/archives/mailing-lists/tru64-unix-managers/1999/06/msg00041.html

What happens: X starts with blank screen, a corrupted mouse pointer shows
up (only a few pixels forming kind of a small line), dxconsole shows up
... and then the crash.

It turned out that this seems to be related with the pixmap graphic in the
cde login window:

I switched to xdm, then a corrupted (vertically striped) digital logo is
displayed in background but xdm worked. DXsession works, the same
corrupted mouse pointer, almost invisible but working. Starting the first
application containing pixmaps now reproduces the crash. (I used xemacs)

Workaround/Solution:

All followups and the originial posting suggest either to use a generic
kernel or to disable X logins.

I installed Open3D V. 4.93 with Open3D_DU40E_PatchKit4, still the same
problem.

No problems with genvmunix (as before), so I built my own genvmunix using
/sys/conf/GENERIC, it works also fine.

Now I checked what the extra options in my /sys/conf/MYSYSTEM compared to
/sys/conf/GENERIC are:

options UERF
options DLI
options DLB
options NTP_TIME
options PCKT
options DEC_ACL
options PACKETFILTER

When I add all these to /sys/conf/GENERIC I get the same crash.

Now I removed the above options from my customized kernel
(/sys/conf/MYSYSTEM) and it works! Of course now I had no more LAT because
of removing DLB.

Now I tried subsequently reenabling these options and it turned out that I
can use UERF, NTP_TIME, PCKT and PACKETFILTER but have to avoid DLI, DLB
and DEC_ACL.

So my workaround boils down to:
+ set XLOGIN to "" in rc.config to stay in console only mode
+ build a custom kernel without DEC ACLs
+ remove DLI and DLB from /sys/conf/SYSTEMNAME (if LAT was installed,
not installing LAT should also solve this)
+ rebuild the kernel (doconfig -c SYSTEMNAME), move it to /vmunix
+ reenable XLOGIN="cde"

Note that I have not heavily tested this, I was just happy to have my
system running again. xdpyinfo reports the GLX extension. Of course I
compiled the GL examples and tested these, results are as expected (some
polygon errors as with DU4.0B+O3D before).
