Hi,
Its a known problem with cron. It appears that cron forks to start
a cron job, it runs a routine to become the user of the job to run.
If for any reason the users files disappear during this phase, cron
does not give an error - it just leaves the forked process running as
root and you see the problem you are
If you cann Compaq they should be able to send you a patched version
of CRON, which avoids the problem - however it does not explain the
root cause of the problem.

We had this problem on our site. Although I cannot recall exactly what the
problem was i.e Multiple cron processes or crontab firing up the same job
several times. However, we have a patch that fixed the problem on our site.
See
if you can call support and ask for this patch. This patch had the same fix
for
V4.0D, E and F.
