I figured this one out on my own:
Last week I was cleaning up my /sbin/rc3.d directory and renaming a bunch of
the Sxxxxxx scripts that start processes that we don't use to free up more
memory by changing the capital S to a lowercase s.
Turns out that if I rename the s19nfs script, the console problem occurs.
If I rename it back to S19nfs the problem goes away. What is an NFS script
doing that would affect the console, I haven't a clue.
BTW, Compaq never called back once today, so much for silver level support.

In regards to the message posted just moments ago by Kevin Dea about his
ES40, my AS2100 (upgraded to 4.0G last week) is now having EXACTLY the same
problem.
I have a call into Compaq (we have silver level support) and they are
researching.
I can do a command line login or a failsafe login but it's hanging on a
shell script that begins with '/bin/sh -c echo '--- not sourcing
The only difference is that my shell is /bin/sh not /usr/bin/tcsh.
