52 pickup with devices

I have been trying recently to get my es40 to recognize a couple of KGPSA-BC
Fibre channel host adapters. While doing this I ran into the following
problem.

These are the steps that I followed.

Booted the ES40 to genvmunix boot -fi genvmunix -fl s
mount -u /
tried to mount /usr so i could to a doconfig
i get the message no such device rz8b
i figured out that all my devices had been rearranged (hence the 52 pickup)
it wasnt hard to find them they all changed in increments of 8 so rz8b is now
rz16b 10c is now 18c etc.
I rebuilt all the links in /etc/fdmns
mount /usr (hey! it worked!)
ok... so to test it all I mount -a (all but one FS comes up ehhh not to
awfull bad it was empty anyway!)

all of my filesystems changed with the exception of the root_domain its
rz8a... yet my usr_domain is rz16b (they are on the same disk)

How can one disk have 2 device names? is this normal? will it hurt me down
the road? has anyone else experienced this?

TIA
