The consensus of the responses to my question say software RAID-5 is available
on LSM with Tru64 version 5.0a only. Version 4.0X only supports striping and
mirroring. As expected, everybody suggests using hardware RAID versus software
RAID. They also say LSM is tricky to configure but very easy to use.
To many responses to list all, but thanks to everybody that replied. My
original question is below:

Can you use Compaq's (Digital's) Logical Storage Manager (LSM) to do
software
RAID-5 instead of getting a hardware raid controller (i.e., HSZ)? I'm
configuring a new ES40 server and trying to save money by not purchasing a
raid
controller. I know software raid will eat up CPU cycles but has anybody had
experience do RAID-5 at the OS level versus using a hardware controller?
thanks,
