Top Command - Free Memory?

Hi

I may be missing the obvious but can anybody explain the meaning of Free Memory
as reported by the top command.
It seems to bear no relation to the values for real and virtual.

Here is an example of what puzzles me:

Memory: Real: 474M/4629M act/tot Virtual: 13M/2047M use/tot Free:
3717M
