I lost the bell on one XP1000 workstation running T64V5.0a a while
ago. The bell returned after checking the leads.

John P Speno suggested checking the CDE style manager settings
to see, if bell is enable or not. This was not the problem.

Dr. Blinn told the bell function is "pretty deep in the kernel" and
it would probably not be a software problem. He suggested checking
the bell leads and the speaker itself. If they'd be ok, then
it would mean a motherboard change, if bell still wouldn't work.

When I finally had a chance to take the workstation down, I opened the
case, vacuumed off a year worth of dust and checked the cables. They
seemed to be in place - no wonder, as the machine hasn't been moved or
otherwise impacted. However, I did move the bell connector a little bit
when I checked it is firmly in place on the motherboard. Apparently,
that helped, since the bell function returned after switching the
machine on again. I suspect it was just some bad contact somewhere,
maybe a loose lead inside the connector or similar.
