I'm hoping someone can help me clear up this 'problem', which may not be
sendmail, but in the client configuration. If so, sorry to toss in the
off-topic posting.
Environment:
----------------
My client email readers use the incoming mail server name:
pop.domain.com
The return address is always:
user_at_domain.com
The outgoing SMTP server is:
mail.domain.com
Using Eudora, I noticed:
Allow Authorization is ENABLED.
Last, I'm using <domain.com> under Domain to add to unqualified addresses in
Eudora.
Periodically, I find bounced error messages to our postmaster address, sent
from the MAILER-DAEMON_at_server.domain.com. The subject is
Local configuration error
The user/email varies, but the messages are the same.
Message sample:
----- Transcript of session follows -----
553 pop.domain.com. config error: mail loops back to me (MX problem?)
554 <user_at_pop.domain.com>... Local configuration error
Reporting-MTA: dns; server.gardeners.com
My host is running Compaq Tru64. I have a /etc/namedb/domain.db file with
the following:
domain.com. IN MX 1 server.domain.com.
; pop/mail must be A record for reverse name resolution
pop IN A 1.2.3.4
The error message shows pop.domain.com for the X-Sender and the Message ID
is id_at_pop.domain.com
Do I need to modify the <pop> reference or add an MX item for pop?
Thanks for the help.
Dale
