My question was how to avoid timeouts running X over a dialup.
Didn't get any responses from the list but from comp.windows.x
I found these suggestions:
ssh using compression and X forwarding.
LBX (low bandwidth X) part of the X distribution.
dxpc (differential X protocol compressor?).
We're already using ssh here so I'll try that first.
