Hi all.

We're experiencing problems with tar on Digital UNIX 4.0D no Service
Packs installed.

We have created a regular tar archive, using "tar cv
/oracle7/ora714/dbs". This archive spanned two tapes. The tape drive is
a DDS2 DAT TLZ09, tapes are DDS2 120m 4/8GB.

Now, we need to restore the tapes and we run into problems. When it
needs to restore a particularly large file (5GB in size), tar dies in
the middle, saying:

"insert next volume"
"this doesn't look like a tar archive"

The way I see it - tar was signaled that the end of tape was reached and
signaled for another tape (volume). Since the tape was inside and DAT
drive did not detect the end of tape, it signaled tar to go on in the
middle of the recording. "Normally", tar crashed.

We have tried to couple this with "dd" and all of these failed:

1. dd bs=10k if=/dev/nrmt0h | tar xf -
2. dd bs=10k if=/dev/nrmt0h of=/oracle7/backup.tar

The tape fails on the same spot. We have tried two different tapes and
two different drives. I have downloaded GNU tar and put it to work,
hoping it would chew it (it still is, but for how long?). I am beginning
to fear our data was lost, at this point. We do have system backup, but
we'll loose a couple days of work.

Do you have any suggestions? Would Service Pack 6 remedy the problem or
at least prevent it from happening again?

Anxiously awaiting responses.

Nix.
