My problem was:

The only response I got was from Dr Tom Blinn, who said:

Doing the backup at run level 2 removed the error messages.
I suspect that the critical factor is that evmd is running at level 2.
The error message says "error [13] posting event", so it is reasonable
that this is caused by not having the event manager running.
The fact that both vdump and rmfset produced similar errors suggests
that the error was in event handling rather than core functions.
I checked the dumps on the tape, and they seem to be fine.
