Su/Security problem

Hello to all managers:

I ran into a strange problem yesterday on my Alpha server. I'm running
Digital Unix 4.0D. While greping some information from the /etc/group
file, to modify a login procedure, (using my own ID) I lost the use of
the SU command.
That is, when I issue an su - root, I only get my original prompt back.
No error messages, no logging nothing. In addition, I noticed that other
commands like ps and w don't behave in their original fashion (under my
ID). For example, I ran a w and I got all the normal information except
the WHAT column (what user are actually doing!) was blank (a dash). Also
the ps command only produced the headers of each column and no
information underneath.

I checked the matrix.conf file but it looks normal to me.
Only root can su to another user. My ID as well a few others are
listed in the system group of the /etc/group file and they
can't su to root either. I check the /var/adm/syslog.dated/
directory for logs of su command but I only saw a few successful
su commands from a root that I had done while trying to figure this
out. There were no logs of failed su attempts.
Any ideas? Your help is much appreciated.
