root and usr on same partition ?

We have an alpha 8400 running 4.0E unix. The strange thing about this is
that the 4.3GB root drive (in mirrored SWCXR raid controller) has only
two partitions, root and swap. I need to upgrade to 5.0A and also want
to use a couple of 9GB drives for system drive. If I make / and /usr
partitions on it, there would be trouble doing a vdump/vrestore to copy
the root file system. (fresh install is out of question as there are too
many things I may have to bring over from old system drive - I didn't
want to get into that). What is wrong with just having root and swap
partitions on the new drive also? I want to know situations when such a
setup would fail (it hasn't obviously let us down so far). This way it
is easier for me to upgrade the system drive to 9GB and later upgrade
OS. If I have to have / and /usr partitions what is the recommended size
for / on a 9GB drive?

thanks
Sridhar
