Compaq 35/70 GB DLT tape + Tru64 5.0A = unable to write to devic e </dev/tape/tape2>; [5] I/O error

Hi managers

I have plugged a Compaq 35/70 GB DTL drive into our 5.0A ES40 - the drive
comes up
OK , as....

/sbin/hwmgr -view devices

[snip]
 67: /dev/ntape/tape2 QUANTUM DLT7000 bus-0-targ-10-lun-0

however when trying to do any vdump I get I/O error. I have tried all the
tape2_d[0-6] devices, also tape2c , to no avail.

The tape I am using is a DLTtape IIIXT (Black Watch Imation).

Does anybody know how to get one of these to work ?
