Hi managers,
I thought I'd add some more details to the problem in case this help
someone to see where the problem lies. Also does anyone know
about the
disklabel question, how to replace a disk (at the bottom of this
message)
slot 0 is a RZ28M-VA 2GB narrow disk (A/0/0)
slot1 is a RZ29B-VA 4Gb narrow disk (A/1/0)
slot2 is a RZ1DF-VA 9GB narrow disk (A/2/0)
slot3 is a RZ1DF-VW 9GB wide disk (A/3/0)
slot4 is a RZ28M -VA 2GB narrow disk (A/4/0)
slot 5 is a RZ1Da - VW 9GB wide disk (A/5/0)
slot 6 is a RZ1DF -VW 9GB wide disk (A/6/0) # This is not
currently installed due to the problems encountered.
The tower has a 150 Watt power supply which is connected to the
back of the Alpha which in turn comes from a UPS.
The cable(s) I have used have been good quality and bought within
the last 6 months. Both are thick and been tested on other
devices; PCs with scanner and external HDDs. The cables
themselves are 1 metre long. The cable now in place is 2 metre
and I do not get these errors. I can boot with all the disk in without
errors on the 2 metre cable but will eventually get cam errors on
the bus after one of the disks is access by about 30 users. But I
can not get the system to start at all with the 1 metre cables. I am
not sure about the termination on the tower. I have never seen the
dip switches but presume they are set with the address pin set to
the corresponding slot number.
Thanx
Dp.

Hi Managers, We have 2 storage works towers on a DEC Alpha
4.0D. One connected to the on-board turbo module and the other
to a dual channel turbo card (PMAZC). This latter tower is nearly
full of disks, a mixture of wide and narrow disk from 2.1 to 9.1GB. I
am trying to fill the last vacate slot with another 9Gb disk. the dev
was made, the label created, and the disk installed. A trial copy
was made and there were no problems. The next day user's
running a program off of one of the disks kept crashing. uerf
showing lots of cam errors. I have had these before after the last
disk I installed and resolved it by getting a shorter cable. So I got a
1M cable and tried again. This time the system would not boot and
I got CCB errors and the system got into a loop trying to reset the
bus. I tested the cable elsewhere and also used another 1M cable.
Still the same problem. Finally I had to set the system back to its
old config. The only possible reason for this that I can see is the
mixture of disks. Could this be the reason? The are spaced out
unevenly with wide SCSI disk inbetween narrow. I would like to put
them altogether but I am not sure whether I should have the narrow
at the end of the bus or at the beginning.
Alternatively I could simply replace the 2.1 GB with 9.1 Gb Wide
disks. To do this do I need to disklabel -z the existing disk label
and then disk label -rw rzxx RZ1DA to be able to swap the 2 disks?
Thanx
